Easiest bus ride ever!
Well, for all my bitching, getting upstate by bus on Wednesday was pretty
damn easy. First off, Julie let me off early (you know that bit about the
coolest boss? Still right up there.) Then, Greyhound had about a billion
extra people working (or port authority did,) either way, the place was
working like clockwork for once.

This Dreaded Day Of Travel
Well, tomorrow we head to our respective homes for the Thanksgiving break,
and join the travelling masses once again. I forget how amazingly awesome
NYC's public transportation is until something like this comes along. Day
in and
day out I get to and from work without much of a thought. Sure, sometimes
the trains are delayed a bit, but really, I've been a lot more pissed off
sitting in traffic than I ever have been waiting for a train.
Now, granted, I will be sitting on a bus for this trip, but that's
actually what's got me worried. See, originally I had planned to check
with Greyhound and make sure that they were going to be running plenty of
extra buses and have someone at Greyhound reassure me that they do this
every year, and delays are expected but everyone eventually gets there. If
the customer service person laughed at me and asked what the hell I was
doing taking a bus the day before thanksgiving, I was going to suck it up
and pay the extra bit for the train.
Well, I found myself a bit sidetracked by life, and although incredibly
happy with the life stuff that occured in the time when I was supposed to
be doing all this travel planning, i've left myself with sold out trains
and the realization that customer service at greyhound bus is "claire,
your virtual service representitive."
I know claire... I know her all too
well. I've unleashed my fury on Sprint's "claire" many a time and
needless to say, we're not on speaking terms.
So, seeing that I'm a web geek by trade, I did what any self respecting
nerd would do and scoured the Greyhound site for
any sign of preparation on their part. What I found instead was a digitial
"go screw yourself if you're travelling tomorrow." The site basically
says, if your bus is sold out, get on the next one if there are seats,
but that one's sold out too, oh, and the one after that, and by the way,
we're still selling tickets for said sold out busses, so it may be till,
oh, maybe saturday before we can get you there. By the way, no refunds or
exchanges. Suck it, and have a nice day.
Wish me luck.

::Ahhhhhhhhh::
This post basically one long digital sigh of relief.
Last night was the first time I've gotten a full nights sleep in a
long
time.
A month ago, Sara and I took on the task of renovating the apartment
across the hall, and since that day, it's been night after late night of
moving the old tenants crap out and down, organizing and moving our stuff,
painting the new place, spackling, caulking, and doing TONS of minor
repairs.
Beyond that, there were also some major renovations to be done, including
replacing the bathroom vanity, the entire kitchen floor, the kitchen
faucet, and scrubbing down what must have been a decade of filth from
every surface in the apartment.
As of last night, we're officially done with all the hard stuff. All
that's left now is a minor leak under the sink in the kitchen and some
cleanup. We wish we'd taken some before pictures, but the "after" will
have to do for now. Excuse the mess - We're still putting out stuff in and
getting it where we want it to be!
See the
renovations

Some Minor Changes
You may notice some minor changes around here as I finally start to do
more than just use basic blosxom and a stock theme. In particular, check
out the Friends and Linkage sections on the left. More to come...

Note to Self
Never tell buyer you're going to give them free upgrade to express
shipping because of their outstanding bid. It will cost you more
money than you expect.

Jury Duty
Well, I've officially been selected as an alternate for a Jury. I'm
sure it violates about 4 million laws if I post anything about the
contents of the trial here, but suffice to say, the experience isn't
all that bad, it's just horribly timed - I've got e-bay
sales to ship out today! Damn democratic republic.

Moved in By Mistake
Well, I hadn't planned on moving us into the new apartment until
thursday, but here I find myself sitting over in the new place typing
away early in the wednesday AM... How did we get here you ask? I'll tell
you
I had originally planned to do one room a night - that seems simple
enough, except for the fact that our new place has more rooms - and a lot
of the stuff was moving from the bedroom in our old place to the living
room here. Especially the carpet. Of course, I wanted to put the carpet
down first in the new living room, so I set about trying to pull it up.
Never - Ever - do that unless you plan to move everything that is also ON
TOP of said carpet. Around 10PM, I finally cried uncle, told Sara I'd
screwed up, and decided just to move the whole bed (which was now in
pieces and all over the old apartment).
We got the bed and carpet moved over, and Sara went to sleep over here,
and I began the task I'd set out to complete so many hours ago - complete
one room tonight. I brought the entire entertainment center and my
computer and desk over, and just for the hell of it, plugged it all in to
the cable that was there. Next thing you know, the cable box has the
correct time on it. I was puzzled and excited - maybe the cable was STILL
ON from the old tenant, and he just happened to have the same exact RCN
service we did? What are the odds of that?
Well, whatever the odds, you're reading this, which means that I got all
of our internet and computer stuff hooked up and it just happened to work
on the cable that's in here. I even have the same freaking IP address.
Hat's off to RCN. Now tomorow all I have to do it call and tell them where
to send the new bill.
Oh yeah. Right after my Jury duty... Grrr.

The Political Compass
Tearsong found a remarkable new site today - it's called The Political
Compass, and basically, it measures a bunch of your political viewpoints
and places you on a map along with other notable politicians.
This would be neat enough on it's own, but the authors of the site have
gone a step further and abolished the traditional left-right scale and
replaced it with a 2D left-Right x Authoritarian-libertarian matrix. It's
pretty uncanny in it's accuracy, and my results certainly shocked me a
bit! So much for being left-middle!
My Score:
Economic Left/Right: -7.25
Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.62
Basically what that means is that I'm a hard line lefty as far as
economics go (industry must be regulated, corporations will NOT do the
right thing if left to themselves, etc...) BUT i'm very libertarian
when in comes to the personal freedoms of the individual - basically,
if you're not hurting someone else, it's none of my, or the
government's business. Some of my more radical views about the well
off individual's responsibility to help those lost in the generational
cycle of poverty landed me way in the corner of this little graph.
